Did you know?

The unusual shape of the stems resembles stapelia, which is reflected in the name of the species.

Senecio stapeliiformis ssp. minor, also known by the nickname Pickle Plant, is an unusual succulent native to South Africa, specifically the Eastern Cape region. This species is also listed under the synonyms Senecio stapeliiformis and Kleinia stapeliiformis, and it is valued mainly for its distinctive stem growth.

The plant produces fleshy, cylindrical stems with green to grey-green patterning. The stems are dark green, often with a slight pinkish tint, and are marked with silvery stripes. They usually have 4 to 6 prominent ribs, along which small scale-like leaves can be seen. Individual stems may reach up to about 25 cm in length and around 2 cm in diameter.

The flowers are large and striking, red to orange in colour, creating a strong contrast with the unusual appearance of the stems.

Senecio stapeliiformis ssp. minor is a resilient species that tolerates drier conditions well and requires a well-drained substrate with careful watering. Fertilising is usually unnecessary. In spring, overgrown stems can easily be cut back, and the cuttings root readily. Thanks to its distinctive look and easy propagation, it is an excellent choice for anyone looking to add a truly unusual and interesting succulent to their collection.
