Senecio mikanioides
The plant prefers semi-shaded locations.
Water regularly, always a few days after the substrate has dried out.
It can tolerate temperatures as low as -1.1 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.
Originally used as an ornamental plant in gardens in the USA, it is rarely cultivated today due to its invasiveness.
Senecio mikanioides, syn. Delairea odorata, is a groundsel also known as German ivy. It originates from the more humid regions of South Africa. The plant is grown mainly for its fast growth and climbing habit.
The leaves are deeply lobed, rather small, and succulent. The plant has a climbing to trailing growth habit and, under suitable conditions, can reach a height of about one meter and a width of around 40 cm. The shoots are flexible and easily adapt to training on supports or trailing from containers.
The flowers are yellow and display the typical characteristics of the genus Senecio. They appear in small inflorescences and contrast with the darker foliage.
Senecio mikanioides prefers a semi-shaded position but tolerates deeper shade as well. It benefits from a more humid environment and regular watering, while the substrate should not remain waterlogged for long periods. Thanks to its easy care and rapid growth, it is well suited as a climbing or trailing houseplant.
