Senecio jacobsenii variegata
The plant likes sunny locations and partial shade.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.
It can withstand temperatures as low as -1.1 °C for short periods. The plant is not frost-resistant.
It tolerates partial shade, where it maintains steady growth and compact overhang. Direct midday sun can lighten the variegation.
Senecio jacobsenii variegata, also known as Kleinia petraea, is a succulent with fleshy stems and a trailing growth habit. It can also be found under the names Notonia petraea or Senecio petraeus. Because of the way it grows, it is nicknamed Trailing Jade.
The leaves are egg-shaped, up to about 6.5 cm long and around 3.2 cm wide, green with creamy white markings. The plant branches strongly and produces long stems that creep along the surface or hang over the edge of a pot. The stems can reach up to around 50 cm, and the variegation may differ from shoot to shoot.
It flowers with bright orange blooms on upright stalks that can grow up to about 40 cm tall. The flowers appear in winter.
The most attractive leaf colouring is usually achieved outdoors in full sun, although the variegation itself may be less noticeable in very strong light. Fertilising can be done only lightly, if desired. Senecio jacobsenii variegata works well on the edge of a shelf, where it can trail down over time, or in a hanging pot, where the cascading stems and leaf pattern are easy to appreciate.
