TIP for you:

Senecio loves it when we cut the plant between the leaves. The senecio is very quick to form a succulent bonsai.

Senecio barbertonicus, also known by the commercial name Senecio Himalaya, was originally named Kleinia barbertonica, named after where it was found. The town of Barberton, located in the north-eastern part of South Africa near the borders with Swaziland and Mozambique, is where the plant was first discovered. It is also found in the wild in these two neighbouring countries.

It is a shrub that grows up to two metres high in nature. In our growing conditions it forms succulent trees reaching about 30 cm in length, they can be taller. The leaves of this plant are cylindrical, no more than half a centimetre wide and about 6-10 cm long. They gradually fall off from the bottom of the plant to form a stem.

The fleshy stems turn purple in full sun, while the leaves remain a lush green. Beautiful yellow flowers, small and fragrant, decorate the tops of the plant and are arranged in typical inflorescences. This plant loves to be cut to help it branch out. The tops can easily be cut off and the cuttings can be re-rooted in the substrate.

Senecio barbertonicus is easy to grow, making it an ideal choice for plant growers. In addition, it is mouldable, making it a suitable succulent bonsai.
