This cultivar dates back to 1975.
Sempervivum Vandersteen is a cultivar bred by Gustaaf v. d. Steen from Belgium in 1975. This houseleek forms rosettes with strongly velvety leaves in brownish tones, giving the plant a deep and subdued appearance. The colouring may change slightly during the year according to the seasons, while the velvety texture remains clearly visible.
It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, mainly mineral substrate that should not remain waterlogged for long periods. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces new rosettes beforehand, ensuring the continuation of the planting. Thanks to its strongly velvety foliage, it is an appealing choice for collectors of houseleeks.
