Did you know?

The species name pumilum means "dwarf" and refers to the very small size of the rosettes.

Sempervivum pumilum is a small botanical species native to the North Caucasus, occurring in Russia and Georgia (Ossetia). It grows in alpine zones and dry scrub at elevations of approximately 1300–3000 m. It forms very small, open rosettes about 1–2 cm in diameter, growing in groups. During flowering, numerous flowers appear, reaching up to about 1 cm in length.

It is best grown in a sunny position in a very well-draining, predominantly mineral substrate that should not remain waterlogged for long periods. It is particularly suitable for rock gardens and crevice plantings that reflect its natural mountain habitat and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but the production of offsets ensures the persistence of the colony. Thanks to its miniature size, it is an excellent choice for fine-scale rock gardens and collections of botanical houseleeks.
