For a long time, it was unclear who actually bred this Czech variety. However, archival records from collectors in Bohemia ultimately confirmed that Sempervivum Plameny originated from Mr. Cmirala.
Sempervivum Plameny is a cultivar bred by Otokar Cmiral from the Czech Republic in 2000. This houseleek forms medium-sized rosettes with intense red to deep crimson colouring that evokes the appearance of flames. The leaves are firm, pointed and slightly hairy along the margins, and the colour expression changes during the year according to the seasons.
It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, mainly mineral substrate, where prolonged waterlogging should be avoided. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces new rosettes beforehand, ensuring the continuation of the clump. Thanks to its strong colouring, it stands out clearly among other houseleek cultivars.
