Gustaaf v.d. Steen was a prominent Belgian houseleek breeder (1969–1986), awarded for a number of his cultivars. Lee Clair's Hybrid No. 3 from 1978 is one of his renowned hybrids.

Sempervivum Lee Clair's Hybrid No. 3 is a cultivar bred by Gustaaf v. d. Steen from Belgium in 1978. This houseleek forms velvety rosettes that are deep dark red in spring. The colouring changes during the year according to the seasons, while the leaf surface retains its soft, velvety texture.

It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, mainly mineral substrate, where prolonged waterlogging should be avoided. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces new rosettes beforehand, ensuring the continuation of the clump. Thanks to its striking spring colouring, it is a good choice for growers looking to add a contrasting cultivar to their collection.
