Did you know?

The species S. kosaninii is named after Nedeljko Kosanin (1874–1934), a prominent Serbian botanist and director of the Jevremovac Botanical Garden.

Sempervivum kosaninii is a botanical species native to the former southern Yugoslavia, specifically present-day North Macedonia. This houseleek naturally occurs on limestone substrates at elevations of approximately 1800–2000 m. It forms dense, flat and open rosettes about 6–8 cm in diameter. Offsets are strongly leafy, can reach up to 12 cm in length and are produced on robust shoots. The fringed leaf margins give the rosettes a subtle silvery sheen. The species is closely related to Sempervivum marmoreum.

It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, predominantly mineral substrate, where prolonged waterlogging must be avoided. It is especially suitable for rock gardens and stony plantings that reflect its natural mountain habitat, and it tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces offsets beforehand that ensure the continued persistence of the colony. Thanks to its natural character and origin, it is an appealing choice for growers interested in botanical houseleeks.
