Sempervivum Guillaumes
Plant likes full sun, can tolerate partial shade. It is suitable for the rock garden or in portable pots.
In a pot, water after the substrate has dried out. When placing in a rock garden, water at your own discretion.
The plant is fully hardy. It can withstand temperatures down to -28.9 °C.
This plant was originally found in the coastal Alps. In particular, it was discovered in the canton of Guillaumes. It was named after this place.
Sempervivum Guillaumes, full name Sempervivum calcareum Guillaumes, can be traced under the name Sempervivum tectorum var. calcareum. It is native to the coastal area in south-eastern France, specifically Guillaumes, from which it takes its name.
It forms dense rosettes of fleshy, green leaves. The red-brown leaf tips gradually expand with age and cover most of the leaf surface. The rosettes tend to be smaller than in the type form.
The flowers are light pink to greenish-white and star-shaped. They appear in summer on long, leafy stems that can reach up to 20 cm in height. The flowers grow arranged in racemes, the plant is monocarpic.
Houseleek thrives in sunny locations where it can tolerate high temperatures and drought. They prefer well-drained soil, preferably stony or sandy, but are not very demanding. They are an ideal choice for rockeries, dry walls or roofs. Thanks to their shallow roots, they can take hold in a small amount of substrate almost anywhere. Watering should be rather moderate, overwatering could cause root rot. Fertilizing is not necessary, as the sedges can get by with very little nutrients. In general, therefore, almost no care is needed and it will grow happily in almost any drier, bright location.
