Excelence is one of the highly velvety cultivars, whose leaves feel soft and smooth to the touch and look soft and smooth.
Sempervivum Excelence is a velvety houseleek cultivar with an unknown breeder, most commonly found in collections in Eastern Europe. It forms medium-sized rosettes with apple-green leaves, featuring light brown spotting at the tips. The leaf surface is strongly velvety, and the colouring changes during the year according to the seasons. Growth is vigorous, with rosettes spreading readily.
It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, predominantly mineral substrate that should not remain waterlogged for long periods. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but the production of offsets ensures the continuity of the planting. Thanks to its velvety foliage and reliable growth, it is a good choice for expanding a houseleek collection.
