Martin Haberer is one of Germany's most prominent and active sedum breeders, and Sempervivum Ependa is among his prized cultivars.
Sempervivum Ependa is a cultivar bred by Martin Haberer from Germany in 2004 and belongs to the S. arachnoideum group. This houseleek forms small rosettes about 2–3 cm in size, light green in colour and marked with distinct white webbing typical of this group. The appearance of the rosettes changes slightly during the year according to the seasons.
It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, mainly mineral substrate that should not remain waterlogged for long periods. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and shallow containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces new rosettes beforehand, ensuring the continuation of the planting. Thanks to its small size and delicate white webbing, it is an excellent choice for detailed and collector houseleek plantings.
