The plant is named after Dr. h.c. Fritz Köhlein, a renowned expert on Sempervivum, in honor of his contribution to this genus.
Sempervivum Dr. Fritz Köhlein is a cultivar bred by Volkmar Schara from Germany in 2004. This houseleek was named in honour of the renowned plant expert and author Dr. h. c. Fritz Köhlein, recognising his contribution to the genus Sempervivum. It is a small seedling derived from the cultivar ‘Zannalee’, showing orange-red tones whose intensity changes markedly during the year according to the seasons.
It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, mainly mineral substrate, where long-term waterlogging should be avoided. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces new rosettes beforehand, ensuring the continuation of the clump. Thanks to its strongly variable colouring, it is an attractive choice for growers who enjoy observing seasonal changes in houseleeks.
