Modern cultivar from the 1990s, distinguished by the striking coloration of its rosettes, especially when grown in full sun.
Sempervivum Donna Karan is a cultivar bred by Volkmar Schara from Germany in 1998. It forms strikingly flat rosettes with broad leaves that emphasise their shape. The leaves have a glossy surface, with a red rosette centre surrounded by wide, shiny green leaves. The flowers are light pink, with a green stigma and prominent red stamens. The colouring changes during the year according to the seasons.
It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, predominantly mineral substrate that should not remain waterlogged for long periods. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces offsets beforehand, ensuring the continuation of the planting. With its flat rosettes and glossy foliage, it is a distinctive cultivar among houseleeks.
