Sempervivum Crimson Velvet
The plant likes full sun, but can also tolerate partial shade. It is suitable for rock gardens or portable containers.
Water the plant in a pot after the substrate has dried out. When placed in a rock garden, water as needed.
The plant is fully frost-resistant.
Rapid growth and striking coloration are best achieved in full sun and in poor, well-drained soil.
Sempervivum Crimson Velvet is a cultivar bred by David T. Ford from the United Kingdom in 1985. This houseleek forms rosettes about 4 cm in size with sharply pointed leaves and a deep red colouring. The leaves are finely fringed over their entire surface, giving the rosettes a softer texture. Growth is fast, and the plants gradually form larger, continuous cushions, while the colouring changes during the year according to the seasons.
It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, mainly mineral substrate that should not remain waterlogged for long periods. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but thanks to rapid offsetting, the planting remains intact. With its dark colouring and vigorous growth, it is a reliable choice for covering larger areas with houseleeks.
