The rosettes of Sempervivum ciliosum reach a diameter of approximately 3–5 cm.

Sempervivum ciliosum, known as the fringed houseleek, is a botanical species native to the southern Balkans. Its natural habitat consists of rock crevices on limestone or serpentine substrates at elevations of approximately 1650–2100 m. It forms greenish-grey, spherical to tightly closed rosettes about 3–5 cm in diameter, densely covered with fine hairs. The leaves are strongly overlapping, narrowly lanceolate, about 2–2.5 cm long and 5–6 mm wide. Outer leaves may show slight reddish colouring in exposed positions. Offsets are produced on strong, partly leafy stolons. The flower stalk reaches a height of around 10 cm and bears bright yellow to yellow-green flowers about 2.5 cm in diameter.

It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, mineral substrate, where prolonged waterlogging must be avoided. It is especially suitable for rock gardens and gravel plantings that mimic its natural conditions and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation without problems. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces offsets beforehand that ensure the continued persistence of the colony. Thanks to its natural appearance and origin, it is an excellent choice for growers who prefer botanical houseleeks.
