Sempervivum Buntstachel is a cultivar bred by Horst Diehm from Germany in 2003. This houseleek forms widely spreading rosettes reaching up to about 10 cm in diameter. The centre of the rosette is deep red, while the leaf tips remain green and sharply pointed, creating a strong colour contrast. The colouring remains attractive even in winter and changes during the year according to the seasons. Growth is rather slow.
It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, predominantly mineral substrate, where prolonged waterlogging should be avoided. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces new rosettes beforehand, ensuring the continuation of the clump. Thanks to its good winter colouring and slower growth, it is well suited for carefully composed plantings.
