This Swiss cultivar dates back to 1978.
Sempervivum Bernia is a cultivar bred by Jakob Eschmann from Switzerland in 1978. This houseleek forms rosettes with an olive-green centre that gradually shifts to purplish brown-red tones toward the outer leaves. The leaf margins are finely edged, giving the rosettes a silvery appearance. The colouring changes during the year according to the seasons.
It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, mainly mineral substrate, where prolonged waterlogging should be avoided. It is suitable for rock gardens, dry stone walls and containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but it produces new rosettes beforehand, ensuring the continuation of the clump. Thanks to its strong colour contrast and silvery leaf margins, it is an appealing addition to any houseleek collection.
