TIP for you:

During the summer, the shades of colour change to a deep red and may go to black. It gives an elegant impression.

Sempervivum Bellotts Pourpre was bred by Gustaaf vd Steen, who worked between 1969 and 1986, and won many awards for his work. For example, he received the Merit Award for the cultivars Tristesse, Palissander, Liliane and Magagnosc. However, the Bellotts Pourpre cultivar was created in 1979. Its mother is considered to be Sempervivum Othello and its father Sempervivum Imperial. The thick leaves change colour throughout the year. They turn deep red to black over the summer and a partial green colouration appears in winter. There are a number of slightly different clones.

They thrive in sunny locations where they can tolerate high temperatures and drought. They prefer well-drained soil, preferably stony or sandy, but are not very demanding. They are an ideal choice for rockeries, dry walls or roofs. Thanks to their shallow roots, they can take hold in a small amount of substrate almost anywhere. Watering should be rather moderate, overwatering could cause root rot. Fertilizing is not necessary, as the sedges can get by with very little nutrients. In general, therefore, almost no care is needed and the houseleek will grow happily in almost any drier, bright location.
