Did you know?

The adjective alpestre means "alpine" and refers to the occurrence of the plant in high mountain environments.

Sempervivum alpestre is a botanical cobweb houseleek species native to mountainous regions. It forms small, compact rosettes covered with fine white webbing. The leaves are mainly green; older rosettes may show a slight brownish tint, while younger offsets remain lighter green.

It is best grown in a sunny position in a well-draining, predominantly mineral substrate that should not remain waterlogged for long periods. It is suitable for rock gardens, crevice plantings and shallow containers with drainage, and tolerates year-round outdoor cultivation. The plant is monocarpic, meaning the mother rosette dies after flowering, but the production of offsets ensures the persistence of the planting. Thanks to its natural alpine origin, it is a reliable choice for growing botanical houseleeks.
