Selenicereus grandiflorus
The plant likes a sunny habitat or partial shade.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Do not water in winter.
Room temperatures are ideal for the plant. The plant is not hardy.
The succulent is called the Queen of the Night. The nickname is derived from the flower that blooms for only 1 night and fades away during the morning.
Selenicereus grandiflorus, also known as Queen of night, named for its beautiful night flowers. It is an overhanging cactus native to Mexico and Central America.
Selenicereus grandiflorus is distinguished primarily by its long, green stems that turn brown in the sun. Its stems tend to be covered with aerial roots. This succulent is an epiphytic plant, i.e. it grows on the branches of other trees and uses them for support.
The main attraction of the plant is undoubtedly its stunning flowers. The white to yellow funnel-shaped flowers, up to 30 cm across, open for one night only, usually from evening to morning. The flowers tend to form on older and larger plants.
Selenicereus grandiflorus can be summered, e.g. on an outdoor windowsill, hanging from a tree or anywhere in direct sunlight. It tolerates low humidity and room temperature well. In winter, watering should be kept to a minimum and ideally the temperature should be reduced to 15 °C if possible. It is excellent for growing as an overhanging cactus and will charm with the striking beauty of its ephemeral flowers.
