Did you know?

Its description dates back to 1828 — it is one of the long-known sedums.

Sedum urvillei, known as Pontic stonecrop, is a less common species originating from the eastern Mediterranean region. Its distribution includes the southern Balkans, western Anatolia and the Pannonian Basin, with disjunct occurrences in the southern Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains. In nature, it grows in dry steppes, sandy areas, rocky sites and stabilized screes, reaching elevations of up to approximately 2450 meters above sea level.

The leaves are alternate, up to one centimeter long, dark green to greyish in color and densely arranged along the stems. The stems are richly branched and form a low, compact growth habit. The plant usually reaches a height of around 5 cm.

The flowers are star-shaped and yellow. They appear during the summer season, with flowering typically occurring in June and July.

Sedum urvillei is an undemanding and fully frost-hardy plant suitable for outdoor cultivation. It requires a well-draining substrate and a sunny position, while the soil should not remain waterlogged for long periods and watering is recommended only during prolonged drought. Thanks to its resilience, it is a reliable choice for rock gardens and other dry planting sites.
