The name Cape Blanco refers to the cape on the Pacific coast in southwestern Oregon, which is the westernmost point of this US state.

Sedum spathulifolium Cape Blanco is a cultivar of Sedum spathulifolium, also known as Broadleaf Stonecrop. The natural species grows along the Pacific coast of North America. The name Cape Blanco refers to a headland on the Pacific coast of southwestern Oregon, the westernmost point of the state. The epithet spathulifolium means “spoon-shaped,” describing the form of the leaves.

The plant forms a dense mat of powdery, grey-green leaves with a purple tint. During dry periods or under intense sunlight, the foliage may develop soft pink tones. It branches freely to the sides and grows to a height of around 10 cm.

The flowers are yellow, star-shaped, and up to about 1.5 cm across. They appear in late summer, carried in small terminal clusters above the low cushion of foliage.

Sedum spathulifolium Cape Blanco is a frost-hardy plant suitable for rock gardens, dry walls, troughs, green roofs, and containers. In very wet winters it may be prone to rotting, so it can be helpful to provide light protection outdoors or move container-grown plants to a sheltered place. If you are looking for a low sedum with striking farina and seasonal colour changes, Cape Blanco is an excellent choice.
