TIP for you:

Outdoor cultivation during the season will promote contrasting colors.

Sedum cyaneum, botanically listed as Hylotelephium cyaneum, is a frost-hardy rock garden succulent also known as Azure Stonecrop. The species epithet cyaneum means “deep blue” and refers to the characteristic foliage colouring. This plant is native to Russia, including eastern Siberia and Sakhalin Island, as well as northern Japan.

The plant forms low, carpet-like growth with fleshy, smooth leaves arranged in small rosettes. The leaves are grey-green to pinkish and may change colour through the year depending on light and temperature. They are spatulate to lance-shaped with a pointed tip and can reach up to about 1.3 cm in length. Growth remains compact, with short stems close to the ground.

The flowers are star-shaped, reddish-purple with dark anthers. They appear in late summer and early autumn in terminal clusters on leafy, often reddish flower stalks, which may grow up to around 8 cm long.

Sedum cyaneum is well suited for rock gardens, dry stone walls, and portable containers with well-drained soil. It performs best in full sun, where the foliage develops its strongest colouring. Thanks to its compact habit, seasonal leaf tones, and vivid late-season flowering, it is an excellent choice for anyone looking to add a less common and visually interesting stonecrop to outdoor plantings.
