Did you know?

The combination of light leaves and rich red flowers is unique among sedums and is one of the main distinguishing features of this species.

Sedum booleanum is an interesting stonecrop species native to Mexico, specifically the state of Nuevo León. It was discovered only in 1990 and naturally grows on gypsum slopes at elevations of around 1,340 metres, where it is adapted to dry and sunny conditions.

The plant produces light blue-green overlapping leaves covered with fine waxy scales, giving it a grey-green appearance. The leaves are thick, reaching about 1 cm in length and around 0.4 cm in width. They are arranged in four straight rows along upright stems, gradually becoming smaller toward the stem tips, while the lower leaves drop off early near the base. The species has a shrubby growth habit and can reach up to about 15 cm in height and around 25 cm in spread.

The flowers are especially unusual for a Sedum, as they are bright red in colour. They appear in terminal clusters in early summer and provide a striking feature against the soft-toned foliage.

Sedum booleanum is an undemanding, rather slow-growing succulent best suited for a sunny position with plenty of fresh air. A well-drained substrate is essential, and fertilising is usually unnecessary. Thanks to its distinctive leaf arrangement and unique red flowering, it is an excellent choice for anyone looking to add a less common and botanically interesting stonecrop to their collection.
