The epithet gaertneri commemorates the Gaertner family, one of the first settlers in Brazil, where this species originates.

The plant forms flat, segmented shoots of green color that may become slightly trailing with growth. Individual segments are firm, smooth, and spineless. Growth is gradual, and the plant maintains a compact, well-branched habit.
The flowers are star-shaped, composed of narrow, pointed petals in shades ranging from orange to salmon. They appear singly at the ends of the shoots and bloom in spring. The flowers are striking and represent one of the plant’s main ornamental features.
For cultivation, a bright position without direct midday sun is suitable. The substrate should be well-draining and mildly humus-rich, and watering should be regular but moderate, avoiding prolonged waterlogging.
