It likes the sun, but can also tolerate partial shade.

Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.

Room temperature is best. The plant is not frost-resistant.

TIP for you:

Dense hair covers almost the entire plant and gives it an unmistakable appearance.

Portulaca werdermannii originates from the Chapada Diamantina National Park in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The species name “werdermannii” honors Prof. Dr. Erich Werdermann (1892–1959), a German botanist based in Berlin, a specialist in cacti, and former director of the Botanischer Garten and Museum Berlin.

The plant has small green leaves with distinct hairs in the leaf axils. The shoots reach a length of approximately 15–20 cm and tend to become trailing over time.

The flowers are terminal and purplish red in color. They appear at the tips of the shoots during the growing season.

The plant is also suitable for shaping. For cultivation, it is recommended to use a well-draining substrate, provide a bright position, and adjust watering so that the substrate does not remain wet for long periods. Portulaca werdermannii is an interesting choice for growers looking to add a less common species with a different appearance to their collection.
