Did you know?

The species name tetragonum is derived from the Greek words tetra (four) and gonia (angle).

Pelargonium tetragonum comes from South Africa, from the Eastern Cape and Western Cape regions. The species name tetragonum is derived from Greek tetra – four and gonia – angle, referring to its characteristic square-edged stem. It is also known by the common name square-stemmed pelargonium. The plant is adapted to dry habitats as a xerophyte.

Its growth is formed by almost leafless, three- to four-angled, jointed and succulent stems that branch from the base. When leaves are present, they are fleshy, palm-shaped, and may show red zonal markings. If supported by surrounding vegetation, the plant can reach a height of up to about 2 m, and its stems can easily be mistaken at first glance for a member of the Euphorbia family.

The flowers are pink and typically appear around September. The flowering provides a pleasant contrast to the stem-based structure of the plant.

Pelargonium tetragonum requires very well-draining soil and careful watering, as it can rot easily if overwatered. Fertilising is not essential, and the plant generally grows well without it. This species is a good choice for growers looking for a succulent-type pelargonium with distinctive square stems.
