The plant forms a dense, low rosette composed of fleshy, slightly flattened leaves. The leaves are short, thick, and firm, with gently rounded to slightly pointed tips. The base color is grey-green, which under good light conditions shifts noticeably toward pink to red tones. A waxy coating gives the leaves a matte appearance and also helps protect them from strong sunlight. The rosette retains a compact and regular shape over a long period, while older plants may develop a short stem or produce side offsets.
Flowers usually appear in late spring. They are barrel-shaped, red to orange in color, often with darker tips, and are borne on longer flowering stems rising above the rosette.
Pachyphytum compactum Red requires a bright position, ideally with direct sun, which enhances the coloration of the leaves. The substrate should be very well-draining, and watering should be moderate, only after the soil has completely dried. With proper care, it is an undemanding yet visually striking succulent that stands out both as a solitary plant and as part of a succulent collection.
