Did you know?

The name tuna refers to the fruit of the prickly pear. The fruits of some Opuntia species have traditionally been used as food.

Opuntia tuna is a cactus belonging to the Cactaceae family, native to Mexico and Jamaica. In its natural habitat, it grows in warm regions with a seasonally dry climate, where it is adapted to long periods of limited rainfall. Thanks to its resilience and distinctive appearance, it has also spread to other warm regions of the world.

It develops a branching, shrubby growth habit with flat, oval to elongated segments in a rich green colour. The surfaces feature prominent areoles bearing fine bristles and long, sturdy spines that may have a yellowish tint. Older plants gradually form larger, bushy specimens and can reach around one metre in height or more.

Striking flowers in shades of yellow to orange-red appear along the edges of mature segments. After flowering, the plant may produce fleshy, elongated fruits ranging from red to purplish in colour. The flowers and fruits add to its distinctive appearance, especially in older, well-established specimens.

Opuntia tuna needs a sunny position and a very well-drained, predominantly mineral substrate. Water only after the substrate has dried out completely and reduce watering considerably during cooler periods. Prolonged waterlogging can cause root rot. In cooler climates, it is best grown in a container and moved to a bright, dry, frost-free location for winter. With its branching growth, prominent spines and attractive flowers, it is an appealing choice for enthusiasts of classic prickly pear cacti.
