Opuntia orbiculata
Ideally, place in a sunny location or in a place with diffused light.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Do not water in winter.
The cactus can withstand temperatures as low as -12.2 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not fully frost-resistant.
Compared to other prickly pears, it has few spines, which makes it easier to handle.
Opuntia orbiculata is a species of prickly pear cactus belonging to the group of flat, jointed cacti. It is a succulent native to arid regions of North America, cultivated mainly for the characteristic shape of its pads. In cultivation, it is commonly grown both as a houseplant and as an outdoor plant.
The plant is composed of flat, oval pads that grow in sequence and form an upright, slightly branched habit. The pads are fleshy, smooth, and light green in color. Their surface bears areoles with small glochids and usually only a limited number of spines, which is typical for this type of opuntia.
The flowers emerge from the edges of the pads and have the classic structure typical of opuntia flowers.
This succulent requires a very bright position, a well-draining mineral substrate, and restrained watering with complete drying between waterings. As a houseplant, it is well suited to bright locations, where it maintains firm pads and a characteristic form, making it an interesting opuntia species for container cultivation.
