Ideally, place in a sunny location or in a place with diffused light.

Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Do not water in winter.

The cactus can tolerate temperatures as low as -6.7 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.

Did you know?

Opuntia macrorhiza is a low, very hardy prickly pear that can easily withstand frost.

Opuntia macrorhiza is a species of prickly pear native to North America, where it naturally occurs mainly in dry regions and open landscapes. It belongs to low, spreading opuntias that are able to expand significantly sideways over time. The species name macrorhiza refers to its strong root system, which allows the plant to manage water efficiently and anchor itself firmly in the soil.

The plant spreads horizontally by means of fleshy, flat oval to elongated oval green segments. Individual segments connect to one another and gradually form wide, continuous clumps. The surface of the segments is covered with pronounced areoles bearing spines distributed across the entire surface. Growth is directed more sideways than upwards, and over time the plant can occupy a relatively large area.

The flowers are showy and bright yellow, often with red markings at the base of the petals. After flowering, narrow, red, juicy fruits develop, which are edible.

Opuntia macrorhiza requires a very well-draining substrate and a bright to sunny position. Watering should be carried out only after the soil has dried, and the substrate must not remain waterlogged for extended periods. Thanks to its ability to spread widely, it is suitable for wider containers or outdoor positions where it has enough space for natural growth.
