Did you know?

Plants of the genus Monanthes are among the smallest succulents and often grow in nature in tiny crevices in rocks, where they form dense, cushion-like growths.

Monanthes muralis Bright is a lighter and more compact form of Monanthes muralis, a miniature succulent naturally growing in rocky crevices on the Canary Islands of El Hierro and La Palma at elevations of roughly 300 to 800 m.

This form has paler leaves and produces even denser, more regular rosettes. The tiny succulent leaves form compact little rosettes on a well-branched shrublet that stays low and neat when grown under good conditions. Its growth is firmer than in the typical form, and the plant tends to maintain a tighter shape.

The flowers are yellowish with a red centre and have the unusual form characteristic of the genus Monanthes. When the plant blooms, it provides a striking detail that complements the miniature rosettes.

Monanthes muralis Bright prefers a bright position and careful watering in order to keep its compact habit. With too little light and excess moisture it may become stretched and lose its form, but with proper care it develops into a dense little shrub that can even be shaped as a miniature succulent bonsai. This lighter form is an excellent choice for growers looking for a very small and compact Monanthes for their collection.
