Did you know?

It originates from the warm regions of East Africa, where it is accustomed to high temperatures, which it also requires in our country.

Monadenium coccineum is a succulent from the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), native to warm regions of East Africa. The species name coccineum means “scarlet” or “crimson” and refers to the intense reddish-pink coloration of both the leaves and the floral structures.

The plant develops thick, upright stems that gradually elongate and can reach up to about 1 meter in length. Branching is sparse and irregular. A caudex forms below the soil surface and serves as a storage organ. The leaves are sessile, keeled, and have a very decorative, serrated margin with a pink tint. They grow only on the upper part of the stems, while the lower sections retain permanent leaf scars, giving the plant a distinctive appearance.

The inflorescences are notable for their strong pink coloration. Both the flower stalks and the cyathia—the characteristic floral structures of spurges—are brightly colored and visually striking even without close inspection.

This succulent requires a bright position, a well-draining substrate, and restrained watering with thorough drying between waterings. During winter, it prefers warmer conditions and a drier regime. With proper care, it becomes a distinctive and unusual plant, especially appealing to collectors of succulents.
