Lachenalia flava
The plant likes a sunny habitat.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Do not water during dormancy.
The temperature should not fall below 0 °C. The plant is not hardy.
Bulbs grow mainly in autumn and winter. The golden flowers, which are the main decoration of the plant, also bloom during the winter and will brighten up your home or greenhouse.
Lachenalia flava belongs to a genus of bulbous perennial plants found in South Africa. The genus Lachenalia is named after the Swiss botanist Werner de Lachenal (1736-1800). The plant occurs naturally on rocky sandstone and shale slopes, where it becomes an ornamental feature of the rugged landscape. It is nicknamed the Golden Opal Flower, and its epithet flava means yellow.
Its leaves are long and light green, with a dark pattern on the surface. These leaves stretch considerably in lack of light, so it is important to ensure good lighting. After flowering, the leaves dry naturally, allowing the plant to go into dormancy.
The flowers are undoubtedly the biggest decoration. The yellow flowers are collected in raceme-like inflorescences, which appear most often in the winter months. These flowers give the plant a charming appearance and catch the eye from afar.
Lachenalia flava is a beautiful bulb that will brighten up your collection even in the winter months. The golden beauty of its charming flowers will make up for the periods of dormancy in the growing season.
