Hoya rubra
Place in a bright location with filtered light. It can be grown as a trailing plant or trained onto a support. Protect it from strong midday sun during the summer.
Water after the substrate has partially dried out. Do not allow the plant to stand in water between waterings. Reduce watering during winter.
Normal room temperatures are ideal. During winter, protect the plant from temperatures below 15 °C and from cold drafts.
Allow the shoots to trail freely or gradually train them onto a support.
Hoya rubra, known also as a wax plant, is a popular houseplant from the Apocynaceae family. It produces long, flexible shoots that can trail from a pot or be trained onto a support.
The leaves are thick, fleshy, smooth and glossy, with an oval shape and rich green colour. The plant gradually develops longer shoots and forms an attractive trailing or climbing growth habit.
The flowers appear in rounded clusters. Individual flowers are waxy and star-shaped, light pink to pinkish, with a distinctive pink-red central corona. They are pleasantly fragrant and can bloom repeatedly from the same flower spurs.
Hoya rubra is an easy-to-grow houseplant suitable for container cultivation. It grows best in a bright position with filtered light and in an airy, well-drained substrate. Water after the substrate has partially dried out and reduce watering during winter. Thanks to its glossy green leaves, long shoots and fragrant flowers, it is an attractive wax plant that looks beautiful both as a trailing and climbing houseplant.
