Ideally, place it in partial shade, although it also tolerates full sun.
Water only a few days after the substrate has dried out completely. Reduce watering during winter.
It can briefly tolerate temperatures down to -1.1 °C, but it is not frost hardy.
The species name coarctata means “compressed” or “closely packed,” referring to the tightly overlapping leaves along the stem.
Haworthia coarctata is a compact succulent native to South Africa, where it grows on rocky slopes and outcrops in the Eastern Cape. Its hardiness and ease of cultivation have made it one of the most popular species of the genus Haworthia.
The plant forms upright, column-like stems densely covered with dark green, triangular leaves. The leaves are thick and firm, with small white tubercles on their outer surface, giving the plant its distinctive textured appearance. It typically grows to around 15–20 cm tall and gradually produces offsets, forming dense clumps with age.
The flowers are small, white to creamy white, often with a faint greenish or brownish stripe. They are borne on a long, slender flower stalk that rises well above the plant and usually appear in spring or summer.
Haworthia coarctata prefers a bright location without prolonged harsh midday sun, although it also tolerates partial shade. It requires a very well-draining substrate and moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Its slow growth, compact size, and easy care make it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced succulent growers.
