Gasteria glomerata
The plant likes sunny locations, but can also tolerate partial shade.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.
It can withstand temperatures down to -3.9 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.
In nature, it can be found on the rocks around Kouga Dam, from which it gets its name, "Kouga Gasteria."
Gasteria glomerata is a species also known as Kouga Gasteria or Ox Tongue. It occurs naturally in the Kouga Dam area in the Cape, where it grows on steep, often almost vertical rocky ledges that are shaded and south-facing. The plants can also be observed on rock faces along the Kouga River and the dam itself.
This is a small stemless Gasteria with tongue-shaped, grey-green leaves arranged in two opposite vertical rows. The leaves grow up to about 5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, have a slightly rough surface, and are often strongly curved. The plant reaches around 4 cm in height and about 8 cm in diameter, offsetting from the base and forming dense clumps that can grow up to 20 cm across.
The inflorescences are upright, borne on stalks up to 20 cm long. Each carries around 8 to 20 red flowers, which appear in spring.
Gasteria glomerata grows well even in small pots or containers and does not require fertilizing. Dry and cooler winter conditions help promote flowering. If you are looking for a compact Gasteria suitable for limited space, this species is a very good choice.
