The plant likes partial shade, but can also tolerate sunny locations.

Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter. It is better to water less than too much.

It can withstand temperatures as low as -3.9 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.

TIP for you:

Euphorbia appreciate overwintering in a warmer environment – cold overwintering is usually not good for them.

Euphorbia louwii was described in 1980 by Larry Leach and named after Dr. W. J. Louw, who discovered the plant near Marken in the Limpopo province. The species name directly refers to its discoverer.

The stems are greenish blue, five- to seven-angled, in places almost cylindrical. A characteristic feature is a spiny projection that is almost always present and can reach up to 1 cm in length. The plant has a shrubby growth habit, branching freely from the base, and can reach a height of up to about 1 m.

The flowers are formed at the tips of the growing axes, with each flower composed of three cyathia. The peduncles are short and yellowish green in color.

Euphorbia louwii requires a well-draining substrate and a bright position. Watering should be moderate and only after the substrate has dried, as it must not remain waterlogged for long periods. During winter, it is best kept in warmer conditions.
