Did you know?

This species of spurge is naturally thornless, while its close relative Euphorbia milii (Crown of Thorns) is a distinctly thorny shrub.

Euphorbia geroldii, often referred to as the Thornless Crown of Thorns, originates from subtropical to tropical dry forests, where it is threatened by the loss of its natural habitat. Unlike its spiny relative Euphorbia milii, this species is completely thornless, making it an attractive alternative for growers who appreciate the look of a crown-of-thorns type plant without sharp spines. In cultivation it grows as a semi-succulent, shrubby plant.

The plant has glossy, dark green leaves that can reach up to 8 cm in length and about 3 cm in width. It develops an upright, branching habit and can grow up to approximately 60 cm tall under suitable conditions. Thanks to its growth form, Euphorbia geroldii can be shaped and trained into a small tree.

This species flowers almost continuously throughout the year. The flowers are coral red with a yellow center and appear repeatedly at the tips of the shoots, giving the plant a long-lasting flowering display.

For cultivation, a bright position and a well-draining substrate are recommended, with watering adjusted so the substrate does not remain waterlogged for long periods. During winter, the plant should be kept in a warm environment. Euphorbia geroldii is a good choice for growers looking for a long-flowering, shapeable plant with a clean, thornless appearance.
