The brunnea variety is characterized by dark flowers, while the classic form has pure yellow flowers.

Echidnopsis cereiformis var. brunnea is an interesting form of the genus Echidnopsis, very similar to Echidnopsis dammaniana. It belongs among the so-called “carrion flowers,” although this species usually does not produce a strong smell. The brunnea variant is valued mainly for its darker flowers, while the typical form has clear yellow blooms.

The stems range from green and dull dark green to brownish-green or even reddish tones. They are thick and fleshy, usually with eight ribs that are slightly raised. The shoots can grow up to about 30 cm long, starting upright but becoming trailing with age and forming a spreading clump.

In autumn, small bell-shaped flowers appear in yellow-brown to purplish-brown shades. Flowering is often quite abundant along the stems, especially near the tips, which is typical for this genus.

Echidnopsis cereiformis var. brunnea prefers plenty of light, as deep shade greatly reduces flowering. It tolerates outdoor temperature fluctuations well, and most growth takes place in spring and autumn, while summer heat may bring a period of stagnation. In winter, watering should be strongly reduced. If you are looking for an Echidnopsis with darker flowers and rich autumn blooming, this form is an excellent choice for a collection.
