Ideally, place in a sunny location. The plant can be kept outdoors during the summer.

Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.

It can withstand temperatures down to -3.9 °C, and even lower temperatures for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.

Did you know?

The stems, leaves, and flowers have a distinctive white, waxy coating that distinguishes them from other species at first glance. This coating also protects the plant from the sun and drought.

Echeveria laui is a species named in honor of Alfred Bernhard Lau (1928–2007), a German missionary in Mexico, author, explorer, and collector of cacti and other succulent plants and seeds. The specific epithet “laui” directly refers to his contribution to the discovery and documentation of succulent flora.

The plant forms a rosette of white to sometimes slightly pinkish leaves that are heavily covered with a waxy coating. The rosette grows slowly and can reach a diameter of about 15 cm, rarely producing offsets. The stem may grow up to 10 cm tall and about 1.5 cm in diameter and is covered at the base with persistent dried leaves.

The flowers are red and appear in summer in arching clusters on branched flower stems. These stems can reach up to about 10 cm in length. The stems, bracts, sepals, and flowers are also covered with a strong white powdery coating.

Echeveria laui requires a very well-draining substrate and a bright position. Watering should be restrained and only after the substrate has dried, as it must not remain waterlogged for long periods. Thanks to its distinctive waxy coating and slow growth, it is considered one of the most attractive and sought-after Echeveria species among growers.
