Echeveria Gilva cristata
A bright to sunny location. Gradually acclimatise the plant to direct sunlight.
Water only after the substrate has dried out completely. Reduce watering significantly during winter.
Normal room temperatures are ideal. Protect the plant from frost and prolonged exposure to cold.
The name Gilva comes from Latin and refers to a yellowish to yellow-brown colour. It reflects the characteristic warm tones that the leaves of this echeveria can develop.
Echeveria Gilva cristata is an unusual form of Echeveria Gilva, a succulent from the Crassulaceae family. The term cristata describes its distinctive growth pattern, in which the growing point spreads into a flattened, wavy structure instead of forming a regular growing tip. It is not a separate wild species, but a cultivated form with an unusual growth habit.
Rather than forming a symmetrical rosette, the plant develops flattened, fan-shaped stems with densely arranged, smaller fleshy leaves. Their colour ranges from green to olive green, often with pink or reddish tips. Each plant develops its own individual shape, and new crested sections may appear over time, giving it a truly distinctive silhouette.
Flowering is less common in the crested form than in ordinary Echeveria Gilva. If a flower stalk develops, it may bear small bell-shaped flowers in pink to reddish-pink shades, often with yellowish tips.
Echeveria Gilva cristata needs plenty of light and a very well-draining succulent mix. Water only after the substrate has dried out completely, and avoid leaving water in the centre of the plant. Reduce watering during winter and keep it in a bright, frost-free location. Its unusual, wavy growth makes it an eye-catching feature even in a small pot.
