The plant likes a sunny location. The plant can be grown outdoors in summer.

Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.

It can withstand temperatures as low as -6.7 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.

TIP for you:

The edges of the leaves turn an intense red when grown outdoors from spring to fall.

Echeveria agavoides Red Edge is a cultivar known for its striking red leaf margins. It is sometimes called Lipstick Echeveria because of the bold colouring along the edges. The epithet agavoides means “resembling an agave,” referring to the firm, agave-like rosette shape. The original species comes from Mexico.

The plant forms a compact rosette of apple-green to yellow-green leaves with bright red edges and a sharp terminal spine. The colouring is strongest in full sun, while in lower light the margins remain much less intense. Leaves can reach up to about 8 cm in length and around 4 cm in width. The plant usually grows solitary, or only slowly produces offsets at the base.

The flowers are red to yellowish pink, with petals tipped in pale orange-yellow. They appear in summer on slender flowering stalks that can reach up to about 25 cm tall.

Echeveria agavoides Red Edge is a rather slow-growing plant that prefers a very bright position and well-draining soil. From spring to autumn it can be grown outdoors, where the leaf margins often turn a deep, vivid red. Water only several days after the soil has completely dried out, and fertilising should be done only very lightly. If you are looking for an echeveria with truly bold red edges, Red Edge is one of the most impressive cultivars.
