Delosperma pageanum
The plant likes sunny locations, but can also tolerate partial shade.
Water only when the substrate has been dry for several days. Water minimally in winter.
It can briefly tolerate temperatures down to -3 °C. The plant is not frost-resistant.
They naturally look like miniature old trees — even without any shaping.
Delosperma pageanum originates from the Montagu area in the Little Karoo region of the Western Cape, South Africa. In nature, it grows in dry inland habitats.
It is a shrubby succulent with small, cylindrical green leaves that are produced only at the tips of the branches. Older leaves dry out quickly but remain attached. The plant is densely branched, the stems gradually thicken, and the bark becomes peeling with age. It reaches about 30 cm in height and, even without shaping, gives the impression of small, old trees.
The flowers are purple and resemble those of other ice plants. They appear from June until late autumn, and in some cases flowering may continue through winter.
Delosperma pageanum tolerates more generous watering and is also resistant to light frost. It responds very well to pruning and can be shaped into a succulent bonsai. If you are looking for an unusual Delosperma with a woody character, this species is well worth trying.
