Cylindropuntia imbricata
The plant likes full sun, but can also tolerate partial shade. It is suitable for rock gardens or portable containers.
Water the plant in the pot after the substrate has dried out. Do not water in winter.
The plant is frost-resistant and can withstand temperatures down to -25 °C.
The color of the stem changes depending on the temperature – it remains distinctly green in warm weather, while in cold weather it takes on a striking purplish hue.
Cylindropuntia imbricata is a striking tree-like cactus known as Tree Cholla, Candelabrum Cactus and Cane Cholla. It forms a clearly structured, branched shape reminiscent of a small tree and stands out well even as a solitary plant.
The stems are bright green, turning purplish during colder weather. Each areole carries approximately 10 to 30 relatively short spines that are white to light brown in color. The plant develops a short woody trunk with several upright branches and can reach a height of up to about 3 m.
After the attractive purple flowers, bumpy orange fruits are produced. These fruits remain attached to the plant for many months and continue to be a distinctive feature long after flowering.
Cylindropuntia imbricata is suitable for rock gardens or for growing in portable containers with a very well-draining substrate. It requires a sunny position and restrained watering, while the substrate must not remain waterlogged for extended periods. Thanks to its tree-like growth and long-lasting fruits, it works well as a bold solitary plant.
