Crassula perforata
Ideally, place in a sunny location. The plant is perfect for summer planting.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.
It can withstand temperatures as low as -6.7 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.
Robust and easy to grow, with sufficient light the edges of its leaves turn red.
Crassula perforata is a Crassula species whose specific epithet “perforata” means “pierced” and refers to the characteristic arrangement of the leaves, which appear to be threaded by the stem. In nature, it grows in dry shrubland, often in rock crevices or among boulders, mainly in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal regions of South Africa. It is a highly variable species with leaves ranging from oval to lanceolate in shape.
The leaves are grey-green with typically reddish margins and are arranged in opposite pairs around the stem. The stems are grey-brown, fleshy, and initially upright, but they gradually become woody and tend to lean with age. The plant forms a shrubby habit and under ideal conditions can reach up to about 1 m in height, though it usually remains smaller in cultivation.
The flowers are white and appear in clusters that can reach up to about 8 cm in length. The inflorescence is carried on a rather inconspicuous stem formed by the gradual transformation of leaves into bracts.
Crassula perforata is an undemanding plant suitable for container growing. It requires a well-draining substrate and a bright position, with moderate watering and soil that must not remain waterlogged for long periods. With its characteristic growth and easy care, it is well suited for regular home cultivation.
