Crassula ovata Maruba Nishiki
The plant likes sunny locations, but can also tolerate partial shade.
Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.
It can withstand temperatures down to -1.1 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.
Maruba Nishiki creates striking variegation that is further accentuated in the sun. It is a hardy and slow-growing rarity.
Crassula ovata Maruba Nishiki is a variegated cultivar of jade plant with a typical shrubby growth habit. It is a cultivated form known mainly for the striking coloration of its leaves, which combine green and light-colored areas.
The leaves are thick, fleshy, and broadly oval to obovate. The basic green coloration is complemented by light yellow to creamy variegated areas, while the leaf margins show fine red edging that is especially noticeable in bright light. The leaves grow in opposite pairs on sturdy stems and form a compact, gradually branching shrub. The overall appearance is stable and well balanced.
Flowers form at the ends of the shoots in winter and are white in color.
Crassula ovata Maruba Nishiki requires a well-draining substrate, a bright position, and watering only after the substrate has dried. Direct light supports leaf coloration without making the plant appear delicate. With normal care, it grows reliably and is suitable even for growers looking for a colorful but undemanding jade plant for container cultivation.
