Did you know?

The epithet multicava means "with many cavities" and refers to the tiny porous holes on the leaves.

Crassula multicava is an undemanding species of Crassula native to South Africa, where it grows along forest edges, riverbanks, and in coastal or subtropical thickets. It is also known as Fairy Crassula, and the species epithet multicava refers to the tiny porous structures on the leaves called hydathodes.

The plant produces soft, trailing shoots carrying elliptic to obovate leaves with slightly curved margins. The leaves are green to yellow-green, sometimes with a faint purplish underside, and the upper surface is marked with small sunken darker dots. They can reach up to about 6.5 cm in length and around 4 cm in width. The stems spread outward and form a low, mat-like growth, usually not exceeding about 40 cm in length.

The flowers are small and star-shaped, white to cream in colour, often with reddish tips. They appear from late winter into early spring in clusters above the foliage and are one of the characteristic features of this species.

Crassula multicava is best grown in a bright position with careful watering and a well-drained substrate that should not remain overly wet for long periods. Fertilising is usually unnecessary, and the plant thrives with minimal care. Thanks to its early flowering and ability to form dense groundcover growth, it is an excellent choice for anyone looking to add a reliable and interestingly flowering Crassula to their collection.
