The plant likes sunny locations, but can also tolerate partial shade.

Always water a few days after the substrate has dried out. Reduce watering in winter.

It can withstand temperatures as low as -3.9 °C for short periods. However, the plant is not frost-resistant.

TIP for you:

To keep the plant nice and compact and prevent it from stretching, place it in a bright spot and repot it occasionally in fresh, well-drained soil. Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

Crassula marchandii is a small crassula native to the Vanrhynsdorp area in the Western Cape. The epithet “marchandii” honours G. Marchand, curator of the Crassula collection of Julien Marnier-Lapostolle at Les Cèdres in France. Some specialists consider this taxon to be a natural hybrid, possibly originating from a cross between Crassula grisea and Crassula plegmatoides.

The plant has smooth, glossy leaves arranged in a regular, square column. The leaves are only slightly rounded and can reach up to about 3 cm in length. Their colour ranges from dark green to deep chestnut, depending on the amount of sunlight or cooler conditions they are exposed to. Overall, the plant remains compact and usually grows to a height of around 12.5 cm.

The flowers are inconspicuous, greyish green, and not particularly showy. They appear under suitable conditions during the growing season.

A very well-draining substrate and a bright position are recommended for cultivation. Watering should be done carefully, as this small crassula is sensitive to overwatering. Due to its compact size and orderly growth, Crassula marchandii works well as a houseplant for smaller collections.
